In 2025, the term of office of Belgium, Türkiye and the United Kingdom of Great Brittain and Northern Ireland as Council Members of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme will end. The Netherlands is amongst several countries in Group 1 (region Western Europe and North America) which expressed interest to become a new Member of the Council. Because there are more candidates than seats, regional elections will be held. These elections will take place in the context of the UNESCO General Conference (30 October – 13 November), held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The Permanent Delegation of the Netherlands to UNESCO has distributed a nomination bid amongst the national Permanent Delegations to UNESCO.
Countries can act as Member of the IHP Council for a period of four years; the upcoming round concerning the period 2026-2029. Membership changes occur staggered, meaning that every two years, some Members will step out, and new Members will join in, from each of the Regions.
