Documents published by the Netherlands UNESCO WMO Water Committee

During the past years, the Netherlands UNESCO WMO Water Committee has published several reports, documents and policy recommendations. In all cases, members and/or observers have actively contributed to these publications and they are mentioned as such in the introductions or colophons. Below, a short overview is provided.

💧 IHE Delft, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme, Cap-Net and the Netherlands UNESCO WMO Water Committee have published the report, capturing the discussions and conclusions of the workshop “Developing a Water Education Indicator.”

💧 Participants from leading organizations involved in water education and SDG6 monitoring concluded that an indicator is needed to identify needs of institutions and countries to assess their water education needs – both in terms of the required number of water professionals, and in terms of levels of education or specializations. An indicator helps institutions and countries to develop capacity development initiatives to address future gaps.

💧 The workshop report outlines two tracks of work: assessing and refining available methodologies, and influencing the political discussions about the post-2030 Agenda. Water, and in particular water education, should have a visible place in such an Agenda, and a ‘tested’ indicator to show status and progress.

💧 Building on the results from this workshop and earlier work on the topic, UNESCO IHP will continue promoting and developing a Water Education Indicator.

GEMI proof of concept report the Netherlands

GEMI is the UN-sponsored initiative aiming at establishing and managing a coherent monitoring framework for the implementation of SDG 6 for water and sanitation. It contributes to country progress through well-informed decision-making on water, based on harmonized, comprehensive, timely and accurate information. Six proof of concept countries – including the Netherlands – were invited in 2015 to test the methodologies developed by UN organizations, to collect data for the indicators linked to Sustainable Development Goal 6.3 to 6.6. The publication summarizes results of pilot-testing the draft monitoring methodologies for SDG 6 global indicators, based on the Dutch institutional network, databases and data processes.

Exploring new data for SMART monitoring of water SDG targets

On 30 November and 1 December 2015 the workshop “Exploring new data for SMART monitoring of water SDG targets” took place in the House of the Regional Government in Maastricht, The Netherlands. The workshop was organized by the Netherlands National IHP-HWRP Committee Secretariat and jointly convened by the National IHP-HWRP Committees of The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. The workshop brought together more than 40 scientists, policy-makers and practitioners from the three countries, who analyzed the present state of monitoring in their countries; looked into the water-related targets of the SDGs and their indicators; presented innovative data collection and monitoring techniques; and identified gaps between what is currently being monitored and what needs to be monitored to fulfill the monitoring responsibilities of the water SDGs.
