During the 43rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference, the Netherlands was elected a Member of the Intergovernmental Council of the Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme of UNESCO for the period 2026-2029. In additition of being Council member, the Netherlands will also be represented in the subsidiary Resolutions Drafting Committee.
Several member states stepped down, and others became Council members. Besides the Netherlands, also Burkina Faso, Egypt, France, India, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mali, Mauritania, Paraguay, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, Uruguay and Venezuela joined as new Council Members for the coming four years. Brazil was elected as IHP Council President for the coming two years.
The priorities of the Netherlands include promotion of the need for water education and capacity development for individuals and institutions, and effective implementation of IHP-IX. We will do so in close collaboration with other Member States, National IHP Committees and partners in the UNESCO Water Family.
