Inaugural address Michelle van Vliet, NUWWC co-chair
On 4 September, Michelle van Vliet, co-chair of the Netherlands UNESCO WMO Water Committee, delivered her inaugural address as Professor of ‘Water Quality and Sustainable Water Systems.’
She highlighted the challenges of safeguarding future water security. Even in water-rich countries such as the Netherlands, we see that water security is becoming an in increasing challenge, for various reasons. Climate change, water quality, growing water demand, and being located downstream of river basins, pose that water security is not only a long-term issue but something that can likely happen tomorrow. With her research group, Michelle aims to develop a scientific research programme which adresses and conducts research on this.
